Những chiều xuân đồi vắng, gió heo may
Mắt mở trừng to như muốn hỏi : Vì Sao ?

IN REMEMBRANCE
OF A DEAD FRIEND
English translation : Võ Trường Sơn

Today is the commemoration
Of your passing away
I remember it, no doubt,
But there was no way
To get to your grave
Like often did I
In many previous times.
B’cause, you were aware, perhaps,
That we’ve lost our country.
You’re luckier
To have died earlier
And be buried in our soil.
But for myself and those in exile
The chance was not in sight
To see again the land
That has buried our friends
And our Ancestors.
Your grave might be deserted
Or even worse, unearthed,
To offer rooms to build
Some socialist commune.
I never forgot our days together
When our life as soldiers
Didn’t prevent our love of Beauty.
There were leisure moments
After a savage action
When I composed romantic poems
And you took notes of them
Amid the deep jungle
Under the mystic moonlight.
There were rainy nights
Entrenched, hungry and moody,
You’re dreaming of peace all over the country
That would end all hatred and war
And give you back to your hamlet and mother.
There were country girls, lovers of the Red Berets,
Who wrote to you intimate letters.
But in our soldier’s life
We never plan for the future
When our age is not measured
In terms of years, but of dangers,
Do we ?
There were springtime evenings
When the breeze visited the remote outpost,
In your dream, you were carried away
To the distant countries of old days.
From the medieval to the feudal,
From the oriental to the occidental...
You told me every inch of the Seine
Every street of Washington D.C.
And even the temperature in Paris...
The conclusion always seemed
To be with our homeland and our simple dream
That had never been realized.
Then one day you were the first to die
Your wide open eyes seemed to ask
Why ?
Why should you die ? When your simple wish
Was to see again your old mother, young brothers,
And the village.
When you used to call
The Red Berets : the Immortals !
Farewell to you, I was silent
Wondering of the next moment
Of a reunion
With you.
And those country girls, your admirers,
Where were they as your mourners ?
I was not sure if I was crying
Or it was raining ? ...
*
And today
I’ve gone away !
In your remembrance
Was there any visit to your grave ?
Or it might be deserted
Or even worse, unearthed
To offer rooms to build
A socialist commune ?!.
